Application security
WAF · DDoS · Bot management · API security
Going global removes the perimeter: anyone can reach your endpoints directly. The real risk is not whether you get attacked — it is being attacked without knowing, without blocking, and without a fallback. This layer acts before requests reach origin.
If this sounds familiar
- APIs get called in bulk and scraped, and you cannot attribute the traffic
- You have taken DDoS or HTTP floods and resorted to blocking IP ranges by hand
- The WAF is on but false positives forced you to disable most rules
- Signup, login, coupon and SMS endpoints are farmed by scripts
- Competitors or data brokers continuously harvest your content and pricing
- Security logs are scattered across cloud, gateway and app — you cannot reconstruct an incident
What we put in place
WAF and managed rules
Block OWASP-class attacks and known exploits at the edge. Managed rulesets are updated continuously; the work is tuning false positives down to a level the business accepts — not counting rules.
Capability detail →DDoS mitigation
L3/L4 and L7 attacks absorbed at the network edge, so attack traffic never reaches your bandwidth bill or exhausts origin connections. Non-negotiable for gaming, finance and live streaming.
Capability detail →Bot management
Separate humans, good crawlers and malicious automation using behavioural signals and scoring — not IP blocking, which distributed scripts walk through and real users get hurt by.
Capability detail →API security
Constrain calls with schema validation and positive request models, plus mTLS and client certificates for strong identity. Mobile clients and public APIs are where WAF rules get bypassed most easily.
Boundaries and prerequisites
- A WAF does not fix business-logic flaws. Broken object-level authorisation and price tampering must be fixed in the application
- Bot management needs one to two weeks of traffic learning before scoring is stable — do not enable blocking in week one
- Strict API schema validation breaks old client versions; roll out behind version gating
- If the origin IP has leaked, edge protection can be bypassed. Migration must include rotating origin addresses and restricting who can reach them
Common questions
Are cloud security groups not enough?
No. Security groups work at IP and port level; they cannot read an HTTP request or tell a human from a script. Application-layer attacks need a layer that understands request semantics.
Will a WAF affect real users?
There will be false positives — that is normal for any WAF. Run in observation mode first, tune per endpoint, then switch to blocking. Enabling full blocking on day one nearly always breaks something.
Should all bots be blocked?
No. Search engines and legitimate price comparison are traffic sources; malicious scraping is the cost. Classify first, then decide — better than blanket blocking.
